Chadron Lifespan Wellness Team - October Meeting (10/14/08)

Old Business
National Physical Therapy 5K/10K recap
There were 20 participants in the 5K walk/run. No participants did the 10K. The health professions club helped provide some help to run the event. There are always great prizes. There was another run on the same date in South Dakota that had 6 events (marathon, half marathon, 5K in two different places. This was a good opportunity for local runners to have success.

Website Update
At one time we talked about adding a place for donation on the website. Chuck wanted to make sure that if we needed any approval from CCR to add this. Don King will mention it at the CCR meeting tonight but sees no problems at all.

Walking Routes
The class has been coming up with the maps to be able to add the walking routes. The date for completion is November 18. In the Service Learning grant we were going to have a party with the class where we will pick the brochure. The class meets at 2:00 p.m. This will then go to print the first part of December.

Equipment
LB840 Grant proposal was submitted requesting funding for our shortfall. The LB840 committee reviewed our proposal and they had some questions and a need for clarification. Several of the questions were previously addressed in meeting with some of the city officials. We will gather our information and then request a follow up meeting to clarify the areas of concern.

Child Development Annual Conference - February 21
We could target the child care providers for self care - Tai Chi. There are some fun ways to do Tai Chi with the kids. Jill Mack, Jessica Davies, Roz Mader, Tom Serres were local attendees. There were 30 trainers throughout the Panhandle. One half hour might be sufficient for this portion. There is a possibility Jill Mack could lead this. Jessica will coordinate with the local trainers as well.

Another possibility would be the exercise bands. We may be able to get someone from the Chadron Community Hospital Physical Therapy Department. Sandy will coordinate this part. This section could go 45 minutes. PPHD might be able to get the therabands.

One option might be to split the room in two and have both sessions going at the same time and switch halfway through. Jay will check on which room we will be in.

New Business
Turkey Trot
CCR is hosting the 2008 Turkey Trot on November 22. There is a HPER Majors club at CSC who will coordinate and organize the event (Donna Ritzen and Sarah Thomas). Do we want to assist with blood pressure and health screening? Sarah will check with the club and see if they would like to continue with these activities. Sandy Roes can help do blood pressures on that day.

Homecoming 5K Walk/Run
This will be October 25 at 8:00 a.m. This is a fundraiser for the CSC Track Team - they solicit donations. Sarah Thomas is organizing this. The CSC Track and Wrestling teams will participates. Fliers were distributed at the Physical Therapy Run. This is a free event.

Chili Contest
The group had previous commitments.

PAC Facility
Sarah Thomas got the first drawings for tearing out 2 racquetball courts and the weight room. There is a hope to add windows on the east side facing the football field. They are meeting every 2 weeks. Construction is to start this spring on the racquetball courts and this summer do construction on the weight room. This will double the space for the cardio room.

Cross Country Trail
The Cross Country Trail was funded for a consultant. There is a 4 mile and 2.5 mile loop mapped out. It will be a dirt trail that can be used for hiking, biking, walking.

Worksite Wellness
Extensive discussion about launching the worksite wellness efforts at the Wellness Fair on January 22, 2009. Ann, Don, Sarah, Sandy and Jay were all interested in working with Jessica to launch a concerted effort with the businesses in the Chadron area. It was decided that we would hold a specific organizational meeting to examine our approach for Chadron. We will meet on November 13 from 3:00 - 5:00 PM in the PAC Conference Room. Jessica will lead out in the meeting and provide materials from PPHD for organizing this effort.
